What is the Foundry?

FoundryMUSH is a combination of a chat server and virtual gaming tabletop. Started by Adam Dray, the Foundry is a place for people to hang out, talk about role-playing games and life, and occasionally play table-top style games. The Foundry offers code for dice, cards, and specific support for a handful of games. It's a text-based environment. There aren't pretty graphics there.

It's not a very busy place. It's more like a small living room or friendly gaming group. Expect to find 2-3 people who are awake there at any given time, and sometimes a few more in the evenings. If things seem quiet, say hello and wait a few minutes. People often wake up and are willing to chat about just about anything.

The Foundry's inhabitants include gamers of the "indie" and traditional kinds. We welcome everyone.

Connecting

To connect to the Foundry, you'll need a mud client. You cannot connect to the Foundry using a web browser.

Configure your client to connect to foundry.legendary.org 7777. The 7777 is the port you should connect to.

When you see the connect screen for the first time, pick a name and password and remember them. You'll use these to connect every time. The first time, create your account by typing create name password (substitute your own name and password). You can use your real name, a handle, or whatever, as long as no one else has used it (it'll complain if it's already in use). Don't put spaces in your name.

On subsequent trips to the game, your client will probably log you in automatically if you configure it with the name and password. If you don't, it'll place you at the connect screen and you'll need to type connect name password to get in.

Talking

The Foundry drops new members in a Lounge room. Use the look command to see who is there with you and their status. You can talk to people in the same room as you using the say command. The " (double-quote) can be used as a shortcut for say, too.

You type... You (Bob) see... They see...
say Hi! You say, "Hi!" Bob says, "Hi!"
"Anyone here? You say, "Anyone here?" Bob says, "Anyone here?"

There are a billion other commands, but you really can live without them, or learn them as you find a need. Don't sweat the interface. Just say hi and ask questions and we'll help you from there.

We'll chat with you about just about anything: tabletop gaming, computer gaming, game design, college, work, C programming, food, pets, life, and so on. We love to talk about tabletop gaming stuff though!

Games

Most likely, when you log in, there will not be a game running. If there is, it is probably a closed game; that is, they have all the players they need and want to have their fun without interruptions. It doesn't hurt to ask them if they are taking new players, but most likely, they're not. Do not be discouraged!

Chances are, there are other people like you who also want to play games. With patience and a little luck, you should be able to coordinate a new game. Ask the people in the Lounge. Recruit on other message boards, too. Draw people in to play. The Foundry was created to help people who don't necessarily have local gaming groups. Now the Internet is your potential gaming group. But groups don't just come together magically.

If you need play space and dice tools and stuff, talk to the people online and they can probably help you. Grab an empty room and start playing if you have players. If there isn't an empty room, it's easy for us to make more (takes seconds). Just ask.

Tools

The Foundry offers a weird little collection of coded tools for tabletop gaming. We have some generic dice that handle probably 50-75% of most gamers' needs. It even does Fudge/FATE dice. There's a deck of cards that is pretty configurable.

We also have coded tools for a number of specific indie RPGs. There are dice-rolling and -bidding tools for Dogs in the Vineyard and a My Life with Master deck of cards.

Again, if you don't see what you need, ask. If it's easy, I might just code it on the spot. If it's involved, I'll see what I can do.
